Year 5 and 6 have been working hard, planning and preparing a range of stalls and games for our annual Summer Activity Day.
All pupils in the school were invited to visit the stalls and spend some of their change to help raise school funds. There were lots of creative ideas this year, such as mask making and 'dream catcher' crafting, as well as a range of sporting challenges and an obstacle course. The 'slime' making activity was particularly popular! Of course, lots of food and drink was on offer as well, including: ice cream, milkshake, popcorn, candy floss and biscuits. In addition, there were some fun games (with prizes to win) and a tombola. We also had a special treat this year, as the children had the opportunity to have horse rides on the field, thanks to support from the local community! It was a fantastic day and a great success.
The children raised over £600 for school funds. Well done everyone!
Stanford School had an inspirational speaker visit- Julia Scardone. Julia is a Judo athlete, who has represent Great Britain in many competitions all around the world. She spoke to the pupils about her inspirational, yet challenging journey to become a successful Judo competitor and how having passion, determination, resilience and sportsmanship made her the successful competitor she is today. Julia then demonstrated some basic Judo skills to some KS2 pupils. Thank you Julia, for inspiring Stanford pupils to achieve through hard work and determination!
A small group of pupils from Year 5 and 6 took part in an Athletics tournament at King George V’s Stadium. They represented the school brilliantly and competed in 600 m Run, 75m Sprint, standing long jump and Vortex. The pupils’ skills and behaviour was fantastic, and we are extremely proud they represented Stanford School, Well Done!
Our summer term topic is Britain Since 1948 and for our Hook Day we decided we want to dress in different outfits throughout the 1950s, 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s.
Don't we look fantastic?!
We had a great day learning about the different fashion styles, music, foods and art throughout these decades and as part of our Friday afternoon physical activity session we took part in a Mr Motivator workout! Woo!
Congratulations on this wonderful achievement.
Great game of football in the sun at lunchtime today!
Some pupils from Year 2,4 and 5 took part in an inter- school archery and dodgeball competition on Tuesday. at North Thoresby Primary Academy. Thank you to Mr Read for judging and for Miss Wilson for organising the eggs with the Easter Bunny.
Children from key stage two recently took part in a Junior Swimming Gala at Grimsby Leisure Centre. It was a fantastic afternoon and a great experience for all of the children. They were strong participants and showed great sportsmanship and teamwork skills. They represented the school proudly and all received a medal and certificate.
Special visitors were recently invited into school, to talk to the children about inclusiveness, diversity and treating each other with respect. Children were encouraged, as always, to embrace each others differences and celebrate what makes each of us unique and special.
Year 5 and 6 were treated to special visitors recently, when we invited in Marcus and Fumiko, who practise the Buddhist faith.
We learned a lot about the origins of Buddhism, as well as the core beliefs and morals. It was a very calming and enlightening afternoon, where lots of deep questions were asked and considered. We also all got to have a go at some Buddhist chanting and all children received a bookmark as a souvenir of the visit.
At Stanford we promote a love for reading! Year 5 have teamed up with Year 6 and Year 3 recently to listen to each other read and discuss our favourite books.
We also shared our class novel 'The 1,000 Year Old Boy' and as a class discussed what we predict might happen next...
Star Anise really enjoyed the visit from Will from the Chalk Stream Association. The pupils learnt lots of new things about water life and have been tasked to draw an image for the ‘Community Bug Board’ to be displayed near Laceby beck. Thank you too to Mrs Griffiths, Geography Link Governor, for helping organise this visit.
Mental Health and Well-Being are an integral part of our curriculum at Stanford. One way to promote this is to take part in whole class yoga sessions!
Year 5 have been enjoying their Friday afternoon yoga sessions, here is a link if you would like to continue your yoga sessions at home www.cosmickids.com
We are very fortunate to have some new arrivals expected at school in the very near future. A hatching station has been delivered to school with 10 eggs that are expected to hatch within the next 2 days and they will be with us for the next 10 days. We will post updates on their progress on the science blog for you to check on. We can’t wait to see them and some children are already thinking of names to call them.
Keep an eye on our Science page for updates!
On the 12 March, as part of Science Week, Stanford School had the wonderful “Science Boffins” visit our school. The assemblies and workshops were brilliant and the staff and children loved them. The slime making was a great hit and in Key Stage 2 the children found out about one of the greatest scientists in human history our own local Lincolnshire superstar Sir Isaac Newton. Gravity, rockets and balloons galore !!
Stanford School had a fantastic day for World Book Day! From amazing, creative costumes to designing and creating their favourite character onto a wooden spoon- well done to you all!
Well done to all our winners- Best Spoon Design and Best Costume!
A fantastic day was had by all pupils in Key Stage 2! They worked collaboratively with their peers and rotated around the four different activities in the morning. From creating positions, to using drama skills all linked to a variety of different books.
Star Anise’s activities were based on ‘Voices in the Park’ by Anthony Browne. The book is based on a story told from four different perspectives. We read the story, questioned the different voices and then worked in small groups to create freeze frames as one of the perspectives from the characters in the books.
Pupils from Key Stage took part in our first Gymnastics competition with other local schools. The pupils performed brilliantly with fantastic routines, skills and confidence to impress the judging panel.
Overall we had one of the year 5/6 team place 4th… a fantastic achievement at our first event! Well done to all the pupils who took part, they all have fantastic gymnastics skills where we hope they can showcase these off further in the future, Well done!
We were really lucky to have a poet come to school to share his work.
He spoke to us about why he decided to be a poet and where he gets his inspiration from. He was really funny and we had a lot of fun joining in. After that he went into the classrooms and helped us to write poems.
As part of our 'Speak Out. Stay Safe.' learning this term, we participated in a special assembly with Emma from the NSPCC. We discussed what sort of behaviours are okay, and who we can talk to if we are worried, concerned, or just need someone to have a chat with!
To say thank you for the assembly and workshops, we used our Pupil Voice teams to discuss what type of fundraiser we would like to do to help raise money to support the super work that the NSPCC do.
We decided on a Stanford School Golden Mile Colour Run - it was great fun!
In Key Stage 2 we have been discussing Fundamental British Values and what it means to us. This week we focused on 'Individual Liberty'.
We ranked different statements about Our Rights in order of importance;
'This was a really difficult task - how can you say one is more important? They are all important and everyone will have a different idea of what to put first' - Charlie, Year 6
'My group all disagreed, we couldn't decide so had to have quite a debate about it' - Lucy, Year 5
'Every group had a different idea of what order they should be in. None of us agreed, all of them are really important' - Finley, Year 3
Children enjoyed their debates, giving reasons for their opinions and understanding that there was no right or wrong answer, everyone has their own opinion, which are all respected.
This terms topic is about the Viking invasion of Britain. We learnt about how England looked before The Vikings invaded, located where The Vikings came from, completed some Viking artwork, took part in an Anglo-Saxon vs Viking Rap Battle and began reading this terms class novel - Viking Boy!
We also dressed up as Viking warriors - don't you think we looked fantastic?! We can not wait to find out more about this period of history. We will keep you posted with regular blog updates.
Year 5 visited the Grimsby Fishing Heritage Centre as part of out history topic 'Local Area Study'. We have been learning all about how Grimsby has changed in the past 100 years, particularly focusing on how fishing impacted the local area and how lifestyles have changed.
We had a fantastic time touring the museum taking us back to Grimsby in the early-mid 1900s, learning about how people lived, the role of trawlerman and other crew members and also how the local communities benefited from living in a busy fishing area.
As you can see from the photographs, we thoroughly enjoyed our visit and would like to say a big thank you to David for our museum tour and Ron for our superb tour of the Ross Tiger! We learnt so much and enjoyed every second of the day!
Stanford School have enjoyed their Christmas trip, watching Cinderella! A great time was had by all
Thank you to the year 5 team who organised the ‘Stanford’s Got Talent Show’ which was a brilliant event in school. Special mention to all the contestants and to L who was placed in first position for outstanding piano playing.
Mrs. Brady is delighted that 36 Year 5 children have chosen to continue learning the viola. She is looking forward to extending their playing skills and the repertoire of pieces they will play this year.
Key Stage 2 children enjoyed taking part in a harvest celebration in St Margaret’s Church, as ever the church looked lovely with its decorations created by the congregation.
The children enjoyed singing hymns and performing harvest poems and songs.
As part of our Home Learning we set the task to create a 3D volcano. Well done Cameron for creating a spectacular model – and then making it erupt using sodium bicarbonate and vinegar! We really enjoyed your demonstration and can’t wait to find out more in our Extreme Earth topic.
In Year 5 we have been reading Roman Numerals to 1000 and exploring years written in different Roman Numerals.
We survived! On Friday, Star Anise class had their hook day for their new topic ‘Extreme Earth’. We took on the role of natural disaster survivors and enjoyed an introduction to learning about the effects of earthquakes, tornadoes, typhoons, tsunamis and volcanic eruptions on the local and worldwide communities – physically, mentally and emotionally.
We asked ourselves the following questions;
Can I use survival instincts to explore my local environment for resources after a natural disaster?
Can I explore how people around the world respond to natural disasters?
Can I discuss how a community can be rebuilt after a natural disaster?
Mrs Marsden was very impressed with our mature understanding and reasoning behind our discussions and of course our foraging skills in our Outdoor Learning area! We can not wait to get stuck in to our new topic! Keep checking our Star Anise Class Blog for updates on how our learning progresses with this topic.
