On this page you can see updates over the term of our activities and learning.
We have been learning about the different forces which act on objects and this session we were focusing on air resistance. The children were set a challenge to make parachutes of different sizes to see which one landed last. We discovered that the parachute with the biggest surface area stayed in the air for longer as it ‘caught’ the most air. We then tried investigating whether the same thing happened with larger wings on paper planes. Isn’t science fun?
In art we have been looking at installation art and artists Fernando and Humberto Campana and Yoo, Hyun, Mi, who have used furniture and everyday objects to create artwork. The children were set the challenge to create pieces of art using materials found within school. They did very well figuring out how they could use everyday items creatively.

We have been investigating which drink causes the most tooth decay. To do this, we used hard-boiled eggs to represent teeth and placed them in different drinks: Coke, orange juice, water and milk.
Before starting the experiment, we made predictions. Many of us predicted that Coke would cause the most damage because it is fizzy and contains a lot of sugar. However, we were shocked by the results. Orange juice caused the most damage to the egg, showing clear changes to the shell. This surprised us because orange juice is often thought of as a healthy drink.
Water and milk caused very little or no damage, showing that they are better choices for keeping teeth healthy.
In our next science lesson, we will write up our findings and conclude our experiment. We will explain what we observed, compare the results to our predictions and discuss what we have learned about how different drinks can affect our teeth.
In Geography and History we are learning about China and the Shang Dynasty. The children had an opportunity to try different skills and experiences linked to these themes. First they learnt about how people in China write in Mandarin. Their lettering is quite exquisite and is traditionally written using paint brushes. The children tried writing their names in Mandarin which was really beautiful. Then they used printing to create pictures of blossom trees which grow in China and are often shown in traditional Chinese artwork. Finally they tried rice and noodles which are traditional food staples in China. The children had lots of fun - some said they preferred writing in Mandarin and have done some home learning to practise this new skill!
In year 5 we are learning about the different forces which act on objects. Today we looked at gravity and how it pulls all objects towards the centre of the planet. The children were set a challenge to investigate if this force acted equally on all objects. They were given a selection of objects and they had to predict which would fall the quickest. They were very surprised to discover that all objects landed at the same time.

The children have really enjoyed learning about our local history this term, such as how Grimsby got its name and how Laceby has developed and changed over the years. The children were amazed to find out that artefacts from the Stone Age and Anglo Saxon times have been found in the village and in Cooper Lane in the past. Did you know that over the years Laceby has had 26 different variations of its name??
In Geography this term the children have enjoyed researching climate zones and extreme weather patterns around the globe and within the UK. They even became weather people giving presentations on different types of weather patterns.

In Science we have been investigating materials and how we can mix and separate different materials through sieving, filtering, evaporation and using magnets. The children were asked to decide which method of separation would be the best for varying combinations of liquids and solids. They had lots of fun trying the different methods.
As a part of our learning in DT, the children have been researching seasonality - when different foods are at their best. The children were given the opportunity to try different seasonal fruit and vegetables, especially those grown in the UK. They tried courgettes, pumpkin, pomegranates, pears, leeks, parsnips, watercress, carrot & swede mashed together and celeriac to name but a few. Some of the children were surprised by how good some of them tasted and were keen to report that they had tried eating them at home too. Our next step is to design and make a seasonal dish!

We have been very fortunate to have Sportsforce come into school to offer Leadership training with the Year 5 children. The children were set the task to develop games to play with younger children encouraging teamwork and activity. They can’t wait to start their roles as Play leaders at break times.

A big thank you to Humberside Fire and Rescue for delivering an engaging and informative Fire Safety Talk to our Year 5 and 6 pupils this week. The session was full of valuable insights and important reminders that helped reinforce essential fire safety knowledge. Our pupils came away better informed and more aware of how to stay safe. 🔥👏
